- M4.5 is the threshold at which an earthquake is widely felt and potentially newsworthy anywhere in the world. Smaller events number in the hundreds per day and are mostly imperceptible. You can ask the live map for lower thresholds or specific regions in plain language.
- What does the tsunami flag mean?
- It is a flag from the USGS feed indicating that a tsunami message was issued for the event by NOAA — it does not by itself mean a damaging tsunami occurred. For warnings, consult tsunami.gov.
- Are magnitudes revised after the first report?
- Yes — early magnitude estimates are routinely revised as more seismic data arrives, sometimes by a few tenths. This page always shows the current USGS value, so a number here can legitimately differ from an early news report.
